Tips on Adding Solar Panels to My 2006 Toyota Sequoia for Road Trips?
Hi everyone,
My wife and I take road trips in our 2006 Toyota Sequoia, and I’m looking into adding one or two solar panels so we can keep our EcoFlow power station topped off while we’re parked.
Our power needs are pretty modest. Mostly, I’d like to be able to run a heated blanket at night, use some lights around camp, charge our phones, and power basic small amenities as needed. We’re not trying to build a full RV-style system, just something reliable that gives us a little more comfort and peace of mind when we’re parked for a night or two.
I’m considering either mounting panels on the roof rack or using portable/folding panels that I can set out when we stop. I’d love to hear from anyone who has done something similar on an SUV or overlanding setup.
A few things I’m trying to figure out:
- Is one panel enough, or should I plan for two?
- Would fixed roof-mounted panels or portable panels be better for this kind of use?
- What wattage would you recommend for keeping up with light overnight power use?
- Any tips for clean and safe cable routing into the vehicle?
- Are there EcoFlow solar panels or accessories that pair especially well with this setup?
- Anything you wish you had done differently on your own vehicle solar setup?
Thanks in advance for any advice, photos, or lessons learned!
